Pre-season opens with a loss to Team Kelekonas

Entourage Basketball Inc. was invited by Jammers league to participate in a pre-season friendly last weekend. It was a welcome opportunity to get some needed playing time amidst the ongoing haze saga in S’pore. The league still has not set a start date for Season 12, scheduling problems have been steadily increasing in scope the last few seasons, the friendly was a good compromise to get things rolling.

Unable to field a full roster, 7 players were available at such short notice, Entourage faced Team Kelekonas, a japanese expat team known for excellent shooting and feisty man-to-man defense.

Team Kelekonas: never contend yet never an easy opponent

Though pysically imposing compared to their opponents, Entourage Bbball’s players showed heavy signs of rust, missing easy layups and turning the ball over multiple times.
Kelekonas moved the ball well, and made shots at their usual high percentage clip.

One bright spot for the the green & orange was the play of “T-Rex” Terrence who shot 3-4 from beyond the arc and had multiple successful drives to the basket. Other players on the team seemed sluggish and also had to contend with a very slippery floor at the Queensway SC venue.

The 12 point loss was a good indicator of the team’s current preseason form: a work in progress.

Entourage players among huge turnout at Supras Basketball, Pro-Am SBL tryouts

Basketball season is ramping up in Singapore as the haze continues to be a serious hindrance to all outdoor activities in the Country. Due to league planning issues, Entourage Bball Inc. has not yet been able to compete, but the new season is slated to begin in October.

Meanwhile Singapore’s newest (and toughest) league, the Pro-AM SBL starts early December and teams are already preparing. The Singapore Supras, quarterfinalists last season, held open tryouts at the OCBC Arena this week and the turnout was… stupendous. Over 40 local and expat players showed up, hoping to impress new Supras (and former Entourage) coach Sergei.

SBL will only feature 11 teams this year, down two from the 2014/2015 season, so players from now defunct teams like Fastbreak, Exclusive Fitness and IFS were at OCBC fighting for roster spots. They were joined by Supras Veterans such as Kyle, Jamond, Jemell, Dave, Alex and Brandon: Alex and Dave also having the distinction of being on Entourage Bball Inc’s roster for this year’s Jammers league season.

An unenviable task awaits Supras manager Ben and his coach, the team can only have 20 players on it’s roster, and the videos below demonstrate clearly how much cutting will need to be done.

Haze, haze, go away.

Entourage Basketball Inc. has had to interrupt pre-season preparations due to, well, capitalism.
In a return to 2013 form, widespread burning / razing of farmland on Sumatra and winds blowing the resulting smoke north-west, have Singapore and large areas of Malaysia literally choking. Outdoor sport is out of the question, at least for the sane.

The official indicator for air pollution in Singapore, which is updated hourly, has been recording air quality PSI-levels in the “very unhealthy” range since September 6th.
Today was the first day with acceptable PSI-levels in the city, here’s hoping this is a lasting trend.

Given that the Singapore Grand Prix starts this weekend, i’m sure the organisers of the country’s largest recurring sporting Event would prefer to have full Grandstands when Hamilton, Rosberg and co. race around the Marina Bay Circuit.

Meanwhile Basketball fans can soothe their nerves by watching the Eurobasket semifinals and Final beginning tomorrow morning live on Starhub channel 201. Spain meeting their modern day nemesis, France and the seemingly unstoppable Serbia, taking on (the Fans of) Lithuania; that is quite the Final Four.

Meanwhile, in professional Basketball…

Basketball National teams across the world have been gearing up this Summer to qualify for next Year’s samba-rific fiesta; Rio 2016, the Olympic games.

First up “down under”, were the FIBA Oceanic championships where Australia’s men’s and women’s teams qualified for Rio by beating their cross-ocean rivals, New Zealand. The “Tall Blacks” (and “Tall Ferns”) put up spirited efforts but were no match for the NBA & Euroleague stacked Oz men’s team (Dellavedova, Mills, Bogut, Ingles, Jawai etc.)

On the African continent, Nigeria was dominating Afrobasket 2015 on the way to their first ever African continental title. Another great basketball milestone for the Soccer-dominated country. Forward Al-Farouq Aminu formerly of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and Chamberlain Oguchi did a fine job helping their team win in the Final over perennial Basketball powerhouse, Angola.

Yet all that was just a taste of what’s to come. This month will showcase most of the best teams on the planet, all with their prime rosters, trying to grab a spot in Rio.
Here is an overview of the month’s major tournaments:

LogoFIBAAmericas1 Aug 31 – Sept 12

EuroBasket_tournament_logo Sept 5 – Sept 20

4 continental championships, 3 male, 1 female within the span of a Month! Fantastic for any Basketball fan. With much respect to the Americas, where Mexico is going to have to fend off a rejuvenated Team Canada (amongst others) to defend it’s title, and to Asia, where reigning Champ Iran are still looking strong; THE basketball tournament of the year is Eurobasket.

2013 (and First time) European Champion France has been unbeatable in the lead-up to Eurobasket and with stars Tony Parker, Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum and more back, look to be the team to beat. Yet looks can be deceiving. (we see what you did there Spain: adding Nikola Mirotic to your roster; sly)

Don’t take our word for it, let the experts tell you.

Entouragebball will have it’s own breakdown of Eurobasket2015 online before the Championship kicks off this Saturday.
It’s a going to be a great month, hope all your DVR’s are ready.
